Sir: While I welcome digital television with multi-channels (Media studies, 5 July) and, hopefully, some specialist choice amongst the rubbish, I wonder if BBC World will be made available to us in Britain.

For six months, in South Africa, this pro- gramme kept me up to date with world affairs in great and interesting depth through the night. I do wonder why it can- not replace the banal noise and violence broadcast on British television at this hour, when the cost involved must be minimal, and it is not only the kids that are watching.
