JULIETTE'S WEEKLY FROLIC Chugging and boiling along the road to
Epsom at a blistering twenty feet per hour failed to temper the excitement of my first Derby. Four Oaks and a handful of Corona- tion Cups on half-term holidays now seemed poor fare beside the rollicking brass band patriotism of Derby Day. As for my fifth and. second in the Classics, I can only doff my floppy hat in the direction of the winners and noisily curse fortune that had me on the certainties at Newmarket, -and off after the tempting odds when the favourites bobbed triumphantly home at Epsom.
Having fallen to such an intolerable monetary level, just a few humble and tenta• tive suggestions for the weekend. The stars and their entourages are due to invade San- down Park for the charity Saints and Sinners meeting on Saturday, but suspended, as it is, between Epsom and Ascot more talent is likely to be spotted in the stands than on the track (excepting, of course, the featured paiade of past and present National Hunt stars) and my only strong feelings lie with Hill Circus in the final race. Another
, Murless lady with Oaks ambitions she easily won her only race as a two-year-old, but was a disappointing favourite over classic dis- tance at Newbury and, now fitter, should be much happier running over a mile here. The previous day Close Combat, twice an un- , lucky runner-up before disappointing in France, could prove dangerous, but unable to give 20 lb to dual winner Parissue in the IIWFA Williams Handicap. Up at York on the Saturday, Duration, despite a hefty increase in weight. may prove too much for Palmallet who finished a good third to Lady Lowndes in the Zetland Gold Cup and I select him to make it four in a row.
Assets: £56.72. Outlay: £5 to win Hill' Circus; £2 to win Parissue and Duration.
