Sales talk
Sir: I could not help noticing that for a third time in as many months Christopher Fildes has made a less than well-informed tilt at London City Airport (City and Sub- urban, 29 May). In fact he has begun to sound like a BAA spokesman. What on earth can we have done to upset him?
The truth is that for City and West End businesses our international airport is now a major time-saving option. As the Evening Standard proved conclusively last week, a return trip from Eros in Piccadilly to the Arc de Triomphe via London City Airport was 20 minutes quicker than Stansted, one hour and 20 minutes quicker than Gatwick and one hour and 45 minutes quicker than Heathrow. This probably explains why more and more people are flying through us, in fact an average increase of 46 per cent per month for the last ten months, in the teeth of the dreadful economic climate.
All our staff are telling me that through the new Limehouse Link, Tower Bridge can often be done in just ten minutes parts of the West End in 20 minutes are therefore perfectly feasible. It is much too late to complain about the cost of the tun- nel, so why not just enjoy the marvellous advantages it brings — not least our air- port? We would be very happy to show all this to Mr Fildes, if he is at least open- minded enough to come and see us.
