Head Kielanowski

Sir: Notwithstanding my boundless admira- tion for all Spectator articles written by Anne Applebaum to date, I feel compelled to correct erroneous details she wrote about prominent members of the ancient Polish family of Kielanowski, of which I am now the head.

In 'A tomb with a view' (29 January), a report from Madeira, Anne Applebaum visited the tomb in Funchal of my uncle, Leopold Kielanowski, who is buried there alongside his wife, my aunt, Sophy Meeson- Kielanowski MBE.

First, they did not emigrate to Madeira after the second world war but, in fact, lived all their lives in London and main- tained their picturesque Madeira residence as a family retreat.

Second, my uncle and his wife were not hoteliers and never kept a hotel on the island, as the article suggests. In reality my uncle earned his living in London as a writ- er, journalist, theatre director and chief of the British section of Radio Free Europe for many years.
