The last number of the Overland Friend of China appeared
on the 20th of September. Its editor and proprietor, Mr. Tarrant, had been sentenced to one year's imprisonment fora gross libel on Acting-Governor Caine. The effect of the punishment was the stoppage of the journal, since the authori- ties would not permit the editor to correct proofs or converse with any ex- cept in the presence of the gaoler. In one part of the last number of the journal it is stated that Mr. Tarrant was confined in a cell with felons ; but in another we are informed that he had been removed to the hospital.
