An explosion took place in the coal-mine of Bottom-o'-th'-lient at
Old- ham, on Wednesday, by which the lives of fifteen miners were lost. As the Davy-lamp was the only light used in the mine, it is thought that the in- flammable gas took fire after the breaking of some lamp by the falling-in of a portion of roof. Many of the deaths are attributed rather to the choke- damp after the explosion than to the explosion itself; as the old-fashioned ventilating apparatus was wrecked by the first shock.
