A Glossary of Reference on Subjects Connected with the Far
East. By Herbert A. Giles. (Tritbner.)—This is a dictionary giving expla-
nations of terms commonly used either in speaking or in writing in China, Japan, Malacca, &c. It is intended to serve as a guide and interpreter to any new comer who may be puzzled by the words which, for convenience' sake, old residents are in the habit of employing. It contains not a little information on subjects more interesting than those which occur in common talk,—matters of history, and the like. We may note an interesting item relating to the Chinese equivalent for the name of God,—a matter, it seems, of very serious difference among Missionaries in China.
