Poles apart

CHANNEL Tunnel trains will soon run through to North Pole International. Bri- tish Rail has put up a notice to say so. Has Sir Alastair Morton of Eurotunnel lost his bearings, or his marbles? I urged him to bring out his tunnel at York, which would shorten the time of the overland journey to London. Can he have overshot? The notice, though, is beside the Great Western main line near Wormwood Scrubs. New sheds and tracks are appearing. Not far away, I find from the Railway Clearing House's handbook, is North Pole Junction, on the little-used connecting line from Clapham Junction to Willesden. I take it to be named, as junctions are, after a nearby pub or street — down the line is Junction Road Junction. There is talk of building the rail link down Michael Heseltine's corridor to end at Stratford-atte-Bow - which, I can say from personal observation from the down platform, must be at or near the East Pole.
