STR,—Referring to your "News of the Week" note in the last issue upon the Report of the Inland Revenue Commissioners for the year ending March 31st, you have made a misleading deduction as to the gross amounts of incomes upon which , Income-tax is paid. As the Commissioners themselves point out on pp. 188-89 of their Report, their tables cannot be regarded as giving either the number of Income-tax payers or the total incomes from all sources of the persons appearing therein. The profits classified represent only a section of the income brought under the review of the Department, and your note, as far as it is concerned with the number of persons with incomes exceeding £1,000 a year, is entirely misleading, and conveys an erroneous impression as to the wealth of the
