Parlour pranks

Sir: In your review of the Andrew Roberts biography of Lord Halifax (Books, 23 March), the 'risque ditty' (sung by the Western Brothers, and vei) popular about 1938) was the lament of a chamber maid.

It must be much harder to be risque about parlour maids.
