Sir: I hope you have received a huge number of protests at your publication of a caricature of the Queen 115 November), and if so, that you will, as the Rev A. Simpson suggests (Letters, 29 November) you should, publish an apology for your gross lack of taste in this matter.

Sir: In his letter to the SPECTATOR (29 November) the Rev A. Simpson shows a marked lack of humour. For although the royal family should have a great deal of respect, that does not mean that they should never be joked about.
Besides, if the royal family is as greatly respected as A. Simpson says, what harm will a joke do to the Queen anyway? Perhaps A. Simpson should be put in the stocks, in order to cool him down!

Sir: That my cover drawing of the Queen (15 November) was far from being one of my most successful drawings I will readily admit, that it may be possible to see a hint of cunning in the expression 1 will allow, but that anyone can see evil in the face as the Rev A. Simpson suggests (Letters, 29 November) is to me quite incompre- hensible.
One's work varies from week to week not normally because one is more ill-disposed to some people than others, but for the very mundane reason that like an athlete one is not always on top of one's form.
My own attitude to the royal family is one of detached interest and mild affection, but I must confess that it falls short of ar- dent veneration. 1 realise that for some the portrayal of the Queen in any un- conventional pose must seem a crime only slightly less outrageous than defacing a religious painting, and I naturally apologise to all readers offended in this way. I can only regret that my own feelings, including those of patriotism. are rarely so unmixed.
