Sir: I feel compelled to make my protest against the
cover contents of your last week's issue (23 Janu- ary) which I find revolting and infinitely distressing.
My family has taken the SPEC- TATOR for about forty years and this departure from what has been so long a decent and honourable journal is a very deplorable change.
Allowing for all freedom in ex- pression of opinion, it surely was unnecessary to give Professor Trevor-Roper the unusual honour of a large-print quotation on the cover of the journal and to in- clude in all two copies of the blasphemous drawing to illustrate his views.
