This cardinal fact has converted me, if I may speak
personally, to the garden city idea. It will slough its unhappy phraseology, its irritating mannerisms. It will straighten out its cranks and laugh at its own false enthusiasms and parochial prides, as it becomes less exceptional and more normal. It will be less self-consciously communal. The industrial revolution which spoilt our towns and much of our country has been followed by a motor revolution which is congesting the towns and " uglyfying " the country. We must have industries and we want as many country dwellers as possible. The one and only positive, concrete, practical remedy for the existing evils which threaten to destroy "this England" is the garden city, in which decentralized factories are built on such a plan that their presence does not destroy either the health of the workers or the pleasantness of social life in their neighbourhood. Nightingales continue to sing near the Welwyn bowling green.
