Ms Kenny, OE
From Mr Michael Morton-Evans
Sir: While in no way wishing to argue with Stephen Glover's premise (Tower without responsibility', 29 June) that 25 to 30 years ago a profusion of highly educated young journalists on a newspaper would have been unimaginable, I am reminded of an occasion in 1962 while working on the London Evening Standard.
One morning the secretary to Charles Wintour, the editor, appeared by the Londoner's Diary desk and asked if there were any Old Etonians on the staff. Immediately three hands shot up. The fragrant Mary Kenny, who was also on the diary at the time, was so incensed that the following morning she arrived at work wearing an elegant suit complete with OE tie.
