Sir: I cannot imagine where Mark Amory found those two silly sentences (30 May) which he attributes to me in his review of Hamlet (the 'hysterical reaction' to the Arts Council defence of Mrs Spurling, and the pettish demand for work at the National Theatre),Both are inventions. Since they are printed in inverted commas, implying direct quotation, I would be grateful if you would print this denial. Incidentally, I first worked at the National Theatre in 1964, when I directed Andorra there with Tom Courtenay, Cyril Cusack and Diana Wynyard.
