Sir: Your advertisement in today's Inde- pendent (5 June) claims that this week's Spectator (6 June) includes a contribution from Jeffrey Bernard. On parting with my pound, I find that my copy baldly states `Jeffrey Bernard is away', without any suggestion even as to when he will be back.

To help 'Low life' addicts like myself, perhaps you could indicate Jeff's absence on the front cover of your paper — maybe with a black border — thereby sparing us from disappointment and, for some, need- less expenditure?
