Sir: You do not appear to have published any letters congratulating you on the intro- duction of a bridge column. I cannot believe that you have not received any.

I do remember a letter being published, some years ago, lamenting the absence of such a column — even during the editor- ship of Ian MacLeod, known best as a politician but also widely respected as a successful international bridge player.

So may I add my thanks to those you must have received and express my appreci- ation to Andrew Robson for giving me yet more pleasure in my weekend reading?
