Adoption

Sir: May I bring to the attention of your readers a comfortable contemporary myth? This is that there are far more prospective adopters than there are children available. A few years ago those wanting to adopt outnumbered homeless babies by ten to one. Today the numbers are drawing even, if one discounts the hundreds of children labelled 'unsuitable for adoption.'

At the same time many would-be parents are rejected without any right of appeal. Unreason- able caution on the part of adoption agencies may be robbing many children of parents, and many

"5' couples of children.

I have been commissioned by Hutchinson to write a book about deprived children and am inquiring into the reasons why potential adopters are turned away. If any of your readers have had this experience, would they please write to me at: Elm Lodge, Abbots Leigh, Bristol.
