personal service freely given. All its members are unpaid volunteers.

St. John Ambulance also runs certificated courses in first aid, nursing and allied subjects, thus giving hundreds of thousands of people the skills and confidence to enable them to save life and relieve suffering.

The Cadet Divisions train youngsters in first aid and community services and, through adventure and leadership pursuits, the young are well prepared for good citizenship. All this is in the tradition of true chivalry on which the Order of St. John was founded almost 1000 years ago.

The Ophthalmic Hospital in Jerusalem gives help to all, regardless of race, class or creed, who suffer from eye diseases. It is also involved in a major research programme to find the causes and cure of trachoma which afflicts nearly 400,000,000 people throughout the world. This great endeavour has already achieved very significant progress and results are now giving real promise of considerably improved methods of controlling the disease.
