UCS, Mr Benn and the unprintable
Sir : 1 do not think there will be any good come out of Mr Davies' visit to UCS any more than the visits of Mr Benn and Mr Wilson. Your Parliamentary Correspondent, Mr Hugh Macpherson, may take the view that Mr Berm has done himself a bit of good by getting involved in the UCS debacle, but my own view is that Mr Benn, with or without a beard or moustache, is unlikely to go down a treat with the Clydeside electorate. According to my Branch officials, and I have no reason to disbelieve them, there is a word in general circulation that describes Mr Benn, which I do not think your journal would be prepared to print. Suffice to say that Mr Benn is regarded as a lightweight English politician who would do well to stay at home and give his undivided attention to English party political matters.
So far as Scotland is concerned, the electorate does not yet have the gumption to realize the solution to Scottish problems lies with the Scots themselves, but I sincerely hope at the next election market conditions will have forced them to this conclusion.
