CRISE DE CONSCIENCE Sta,—Criticising French policy in. Algeria Professor
D. W. Brogan in your issue of February 7 writes : 'We, at least, abdicated in the great manner, "comme des messieurs."' But which is the 'white man's coun- try' comparable to Algeria where Britain abdicated in this gentlemanly, manner? Kenya? Central Africa?
I hold no brief for French policy in Algeria. But when it comes to making comparisons between the British and the French it is only fair to remember that the French have, after remarkably little blood- shed, consented to leave large French communities (300,000 in Morocco and 200,000 in Tunisia) to the mercy of the native majority. Britain has yet to show a similar willingness to let the will of the majority prevail in so-called plural societies.—Yours faithfully, 8 Lennox Gardens Mews, SW 1 J. H. HUIZINGA
