. . . stop digging
OVER at Railtrack, they have been read- ing the Gricer report (which I published a fortnight ago) and have taken it to heart. They agree that if they are to take this hole on they must know when to stop digging. It makes sense to them to build a fast line from the coast to the London border where it can join the main line into Waterloo. It makes no sense to burrow on at colossal expense to reach a less convenient destina- tion. This part of the project could be clas- sified as a second phase, to be revisited as the traffic projections develop — which would be a polite way of saying that this bit was a political stunt, and that if the politi- cians still want it they must get the Treasury to pay for it. I suppose that if the Eurostars ever got as far as Stratford they could be diverted down the tube to Bond Street not the quick way, of course, but the pretty way — but I do not think that I.K. Gricer really recommends it.
