From Nicolas Groffman Sir: Max Hastings ('How to lose the battle for Britain', 7 February) mentioned the threat of Russia, saying that 'Whitehall apologists' suggest we need to worry about a resurgence of Russian aggression. This is not a throwaway line — we really need an air force and a navy that can deal with an armed and dangerous Russia. And what of China? China's government says it is committed to 'peace and development', but it also says it would use force to attack if Taiwan sought to declare itself an independent country. China and Russia alone provide reason enough for us to maintain and develop advanced war machines capable of dealing with the Sukhoi Su-27s, Blackjack bombers, and Type-93 and Type-94 submarines that these countries possess.
