For all the Saints
Sir: I am not at all sure that the always admirable Miles Kington needs to be apologetic to the sometimes admirable P. J. Kavanagh (Postscript, 26 November) for failing to realise that 'All Saints' Day is for all souls, not just saints'.
Although I am not quite a septuagen- arian, I have been blessedly god-free since the age of twelve but have maintained a lively interest in the quaintnesses of the churches. This has always led me to under- stand that the generality (as distinct from the elite) were catered for on the day following All Saints', namely 2 November, known as All Souls' Day. This date used to be so designated in most diaries and almanacs although the practice seems to have declined.
I did not hear Mr Kington's broadcast but if, as I hope, he is thinking of one day publishing his revised list of patron saints, may I suggest that the flourishing 'clo-it- yourself' movement might well adopt as its patron St Onan (Genesis xxxviii)?
