Sir: I.I. Muraben is right to be proud of the worldly success of his fellow Jews, but wrong to attribute it to the bracing effects of adversity (Letters, 31 December).
Adversity hasn't done much for the gyp- sies, the blacks of America, or the untouch- ables of India. Jews succeed because they are cleverer than Christians, and they are cleverer because their religion has influ- enced them to breed for intelligence, while Christians have been breeding for stupidity.
Until recently a clever boy from a poor Jewish family would naturally gravitate to the rabbinate, his studies subsidised by a wealthy patron, whose daughter he would often marry. As rabbi he would be expected to set an example to the community by begetting a large family. The same boy, born a Christian, would probably become a celibate priest.
