lain Macleod
Sir: I crave your indulgence in bringing to the attention of your readers the Appeal for a Memorial to the late lain Macleod which is being launched next week. Many of them will remember with pleasure his tenure of office as one of your predecessors and his writings under the name of' Quoodle.'
Whether people agreed or disagreed with his politics I believe that there was general acceptance of the fact that he was a man of courage and ability who made a considerable contribution to the affairs of the nation and of the Commonwealth and to the proceedings of Parliament. It has been decided by a number of his friends to honour his memory with an 'lain Macleod Memoral Prize' at his old school, Fettes College, Edinburgh to be competed for annually by the boys. It will probably comprise a small memento with a sum of money to be used for any purpose approved by the Headmaster: e.g. to help with a special educational course, for overseas travel and study, for the equipment and ex pense in connection with national ath letic events or voluntary service acti vities.
Because lain Macleod did much to encourage and inspire youth it is felt that this is a memorial which is appropriate and of which he would have approved.
The Appeal Committee, of which the Chairman is Mr Selwyn Lloyd, asks for support for this project. Donations, large or small, will be gratefully received. They should be sent to Lloyds Bank Ltd, 16 St James's Street, London, SWI and marked " Ian Macleod Memorial Appeal" Account No 0588719. They will be promptly acknowledged. Ian Harvey Appeal Secretary, London Old Fettesian Association, 43A Lonsdale Road, London WI I.
