William Palmer was executed, pursuant to his sentence, about half-past
eight o'clock this morning. The people of Stafford had treated the hanging as a spectacle. The space in front of the County Gaol, where a moveable scaf- fold was set up, was covered with platforms for spectators. The inhabitants sacrificed their gardens to afford space fix seats to be let on hire. In the same way, the house-tops and all other places were made available ; so large were the numbers that thronged to the sight. The convict, himself, still cool and unmoved, had interviews with two of his brothers yesterday. He had hopes of a respite until the last. It was this, possibly, as well as Lis rohust physique, which helped to sustain him when he was brought upon the scaffold in the presence of many thousands of people anxious to witness his death. As to confession, he disappointed curiosity—he died '" and made no sign."
