Scots achievement

Sir: You incorrectly say (Portrait of the week, 31 October) that Lord Mackay of Clashfern, whose appointment has delight- ed his friends of every and of no party, is the first member of the Scots Bar to be Lord Chancellor. Mr Alexander Wedder- burn, afterwards Lord Loughborough, was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates on 29 June 1754; the Great Seal was delivered to him by George III on 28 January 1793. It was said of him that his intemperate attack, while Solicitor-General, on Benjamin Franklin 'mainly conduced to the civil war which soon followed, and to the dis- memberment of the empire'.
