Charming as Robert Lynd was as an essayist he was

even more charming as a correspondent. My own memory of him goes back a long way, for I first knew him when he was assistant to R. A. Scott- James, then Literary -Editor of the old Daily News. Tall and stooping, with humorous, sensitive face and a delightful Irish accent, Lynd made his advent a cause of pleasure whenever he appeared. Few men made so many friends. He was deeply interested in Irish politics and one could wish he had added one or two serious books on that subject to his many volumes of essays. jANUS.
