Debit side of democracy
From Mr Michael Gasson Sir: Ghazi Algosaibi (`Bush is leading us to tragedy', 7 September) is right to doubt the benefits of a democratic system of government. It leads to many problems not found in a dictatorship. The elected government's first desire is to obtain another turn in office. It puts this above sound management of the economy, the correct level of taxation to provide public services, and an effective approach to law and order, just to mention three areas of concern.
The constant dodging from issue to issue, fad to fad, ensures that no government can make sensible long-term plans to achieve a stable, prosperous and safe society.
I wouldn't like to see the end of democracy in our country because we might be stuck with Blair or his like for ever, but who are we to insist that other countries hamper their own progress with democracy?
