Ungrateful
Sir: I read the missive of the two Daniels from Bangor with some amusement (Letters, 25 July). They seem to have completely forgotten about a document called 'Orders concerning Organisation and Functions of Military Government in England', which was drawn up by the Germans in September 1940. (The Germans, being foreign, included Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland when they referred to England.) It included a sentence which read: 'The able-bodied male population between the ages of 17 and 45 will . . . be interned and dispatched to the Continent with the minimum of delay.' And there was a regulation concerning correspondence: 'No language other than German, Italian, Spanish, French, Dutch or English may be used in correspondence by post. Dialects are not permitted.'
We can thank God that the Germans never invaded Britain, and that the Welsh Nationalists have the freedom to be ungrateful.
