[To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] Sin,—As you may wish
to keep a record of the views of candidates as to the Referendum, I enclose two replies which I have received from the Liberal and Conservative can- didates in this Holderness Division : — DEAR am very strongly in favour of a Referendum, but I should advocate a 51 per cent. or higher majority of Parliamentary votes in deciding the reference. One-third would probably lead to merely obstructive and repeated application by a " disgruntled "
minority.—Yours faithfully, %V. A. BOWDLER (Major).
DEAR Sin,—Mr. Servington Savery wishes me to acknowledge on his behalf your kind letter of the 28th inst., and desires me to say that in specific cases he would be in favour of a Referendum providing there was no doubt of a universal demand for it.—
Yours faithfully, J. L. SIMMONDS (Election Agent).
