—In this volume we have a sketch of the history of the Army, of the recent changes which have so altered its constitution, and of its pre- sent state. These sketches are accompanied by a candid and moderate criticism of what has been done, not written in the spirit of an alarmist, bat not shrinking from plain-speaking about defects and dangers. It deals with many topics which are not within our province to discuss, but we can confidently recommend it to the attention of our readers.
