The standard of the speeches in Wednesday's debate was very
high. Mr. Ellis Griffith made a brave and able speech in which he gave a crushing reply to the accusation that he was acting against the traditions of his party. "I care nothing for the traditions of my party. What I am concerned about is the interests of my country." The ex-Home Secretary, he went on, had practically said to the Prime Minister : " You do not under- stand your pledge. Let me tell you what it was." The time to object to a pledge was when it was given, not when it was fulfilled.
