Sir John Eden. .Mr Nicholas Ridley and other minions of Mr John Davies are mak- ing spirited attempts to hive off parts of the British Steel Corporation, not excluding Lord Melchett.
Now, I hear that some true believers in free enterprise in Parliament think that in some interfering way they should have some say in how the British Steel Corporation and other nationalised holdings conduct the detail of their business right down to the advertising campaigns. Advertising, for instance, has been deliberately successfully directed as much at recruiting as at selling steel, gas or electricity. Even now with high graduate unemployment levels, successive governments have hardly shown that their intentions to the nationalised industry will give a young man the promise of a thirty- or forty-year career as sound and well paid as a safe seat in the House of Commons,
