"THE SPECTATOR" COMPETITIONS—No.

TOMORROW being the day on which petrol rationing comes into force, we are prompted to offer prizes of a Book Token for r is. and a Book Token for los. 6d. for the best letters (of not more than 250 words) to a Divisional Petroleum Officer claiming a supplementary ration, couched in what you conceive to be the epistolary style of any one of the following : (I) Henry James ; (2) James Joyce ; (3) P. G. Wodehouse ; (4) Bernard Shaw ; (5) the Editor of The

Spectator.

The result of this competition will be announced in our issue of September 29th.

RULES.—Envelopes should be addressed to the Editor, The Spectator, 99 Gower Street, London, W.C. 1, and marked "Com- petition No. i." Entries must be delivered by first post on Friday, September 22nd. The Editor reserves the right to print, in part or in whole, any entry submitted, and to withhold the prize should no entry attain the requisite standard of merit. Competitors are permitted to submit more than one entry, but no competitor is eligible for more than one prize in any given week. Envelopes should bear a lid. stamp. No entries can be returned. No com- munications to the Editor on any subject unconnected with the competition should be sent in the same envelope as an entry. A breach of any of these regulations will cause the entry to be disqualified.
