SIR,—Is it really so 'un-Christian' to accept the consequences of

one's actions, and thereafter to do one's best to compensate the only really innocent party?

Brenda Leys's contempt should be reserved for a society which makes it so unnecessarily difficult for an unmarried mother to keep and care in reason- able circumstances for her child. Nothing whatever can replace adequately the natural mother, and much more could and should be done socially and admin- istratively to help unmarried mothers to bring up their own children.
