The Book of Dzyan
Sir: Francis King asserts that the original text of The Secret Doctrine was "forged in the 1880s by H. P. Blavatsky." As you tell us in a footnote that Francis King is" currently writing a book about the occult," it may be timely to put him right on a few historical facts.
It is seriously accepted in some quarters that Mme Blavatsky, in truth, never existed at all, being herself an invention of Mrs Annie Besant and C. W. Leadbeater. This is as may be. But any schoolboy knows that The Book of Dzyan is a bit older than 100 years! Leslie Gardner 36 New Street, Henley-on-Thames.
Sir: The remark of Mr Francis King on
unreliable sources' was particularly interesting in his review of occult literature (September 8). He condemns H. P. Blavatsky as the forger of The Book of Dzyan. Mr King has certainly beaten the 'unreliable source' method —he provides no source whatsoever for his assertion.
