The Professions, is a series of satires on Law, Physic,

and Divinity, and the Army and Navy ; one satire being devoted to each profession. The writer apologizes for his verse ; but his verse is the best part about hint : had his matter been equal to it, we might have had what the century has not produced, a satire. But, alas ! our author's general views of each calling are vulgar and commonplace, without always possessing even those merits ; and his instances and examples, if true, are rare—mere exceptions, instead of rules. The truth is, lie has formed his style on time study of the best models, but drawn his materials from the novels and tales of Leadeoliall Street.
