A rare spirit

Sir: I must take issue with Simon Heifer on how he treats my home MP, Sir Nicholas Fairbairn (Politics, 9 April).

Anyone who has had the pleasure of this man's company would not fail to appreciate the kernel of brilliance that sustained his almost unbelievable record as a Scottish advocate.

More than this, though, his compulsive compassion for his fellow man and basic generosity of spirit mark him out as some- one whose support I would welcome if I were Michael Portillo.
