Doubtful views

Sir: In response to your leader of 9 Decem- ber, it is certainly logical to be sceptical about grand designs. This is particularly the case when the grand design in question (the EMU) shares so much in common with Conservative policies of the last 16 years: a commitment to reductions in public spend- ing and welfare, and a belief that high unemployment is a worthwhile price for very low levels of inflation.

It is therefore rather odd that Conserva- tives are so split about monetary union, and quite incomprehensible that Labour is so wholeheartedly in favour of it!
