Home LeRoi Jones (MacGibbon and Kee 30s) Mr Jones's writing is clumsy and his message restricted: 'The Black Artist's role in America is. to aid in the destruction of America as he knows it.' The case for the American negro is well argued, the observation sound, but the solution fails to convince.
The Making of the American Theatre Howard Taubman (Longmans 65s). This is an excellent history, restricting itself to the facts, a colour- ful sketch or two and photographs—even if, to borrow Mr Taubman's own metaphor, his pages are too often thickets of titles, dates and famous names.
The Revoluticoi of the Dons Sheldon Rothblatt (Faber 50s). A study of Cambridge's attempts to preserve its identity and redefine its function against a shifting background of industrial, commercial and social revolution. For the dedicated student of Victorian society.
