Which way now?

There have been two elections of critical importance in this country since the war. The first was that of 1945. Then the country gave Labour a mandate to set it on a particular and collectivist course. The second was in 1970, when a totally unexpected mandate was given to Mr Heath, not to administer the country according to what he now claims are his ideas of moderation, but to bring about a self-reliant revolution in Britain. Neither between 1964 and 1970 did Mr Wilson, nor between 1970 and now did Mr Heath, live up to the promises of 1945 and 1970. But it is these promises that must again be inspected, and renewed. Few would wish to compare Mr Wilson with Mr Attlee, nor the Mr Heath of today with the Mr Heath of June 1970. Nonetheless, the challenge of earlier ideas and ideals must be posed. In which direction is the country to march at the end of this month?
