Hail to the Chief
In Italy the people cheered President Frei wherever he went. The press was full of him. In France General de Ciaulle's reception was at its most spectacular. The press ditto. One does not expect the British people to behave as spon- taneously as the Italians; nor does one over- estimate how much de Gaulle has to offer Latin America in real terms simply because he is flatter- ing and hospitable, nor even prefer the warmth of the European press compared to the relative objectivity of our own. On the contrary, I am sure that the President is being treated most hand- somely, itnd that in the places that matter the importance of his mission is fully recognised. President Frei will not go away empty handed. Anglo-Chilean, Anglo-Latin American relations indeed are unclouded--but it is a pretty empty sky. I could wish the President was getting just a little more attention in our newspapers, and a few more people recognised how significant this visit is.
