All who have visited Mount Vernon, the home of George
Washington on the Potomac, one of the most dignified and delightful memorials to a gwat man in any part of the English-speaking world, will welcome the announcement that an attempt is being made to secure £200,000 to purchase Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson at Charlottesville, Virginia, as a memorial to the great statesman who drafted the Declaration of Independence. The great charm of Mount Vernon, apart from the reverence with which every relic of the " Father of his country " is always tended, is that here can be seen and visualized the life of an " English gentleman in America " in the middle of the eighteenth century. If a similar atmosphere can be introduced into Monticello as a' memorial to Thomas Jefferson, the committee will deserve the thanks of all lovers of democracy.
