Most social workers are familiar with the deplorably low wages
commonly paid in hotels, restaurants and clubs—the result, no doubt, largely of the assumption that tips will bring the total to a reasonable level. Apparently conditions in some of the restaurants run by Government Departments are as bad as any—indeed, in some ways worse, for in this case there are no tips. I am told, for example, of one of them where a woman of 29 was being maid (she has since broken down) 19s. a week, together, I imagine, with some food.
