U Thant's war
Sir: I feel that despite Mr John Ennals's spirited replies, the case which you originally stated under the above heading (26 May) still holds good. That the precipitate withdrawal of UNEP without ade- quate discussion with all interested parties was a disastrous error of judgment is by now obvious and widely accepted. What matters, surely, is that all who understand the importance of sustaining the United Nations organisation should seek every opportunity of refurbishing its reputation.
To this end Mr Ennals's suggestion of trying to give the kiss of life to the corpse of the Egyptian- Israeli Mixed Armistice Commission would hardly, I think, be helpful. After the events of last week the Commission lies buried deep in the Sinai sand. And there it doubtless will stay.
The United Nations might well have an effective role to play in assisting the settlement to be nego- tiated between Israel and her Arab neighbours, and it is upon this aspect that one feels efforts should be concentrated.
