Oil and food
Sir: With the price of oil rising and its serious consequences about to fall upon us all, may , T I point out that it is essential that Wherever cheapness in anything can be found it should be made available to all our People. The greatest source of cheapness today is in food —from the soils, seasons and climates of the whole world. If that were made available it would help to maximise the purchasing power of the people's wages. It would help to reduce the demands for higher wages and thus reduce at least one pressure for inflation. It is a remarkable fact that while the Conservative Party and a number of organisations demand freedom for the individual the most important freedom they deny the individual is the freedom to buy food from the cheapest market. Mrs Thatcher is a lady of high integrity and unselfish purpose but before too long she will have to face the food issue. Let us hope that she will prove to be another Sir Robert Peel. If she does so She will go down in history as one of our greatest Prime Ministers. S. W. Alexander President, Free Trade League, 44 Speed House, Barbican, London EC2
