result which I don't think he can have intended.

Without it I would certainly have thought C. P. Snow's picture of the pettiness, abuse and violence which could be found within Cam- bridge walls was overdrawn. Dr. Leavis has now demonstrated that Snow was only too accurate.

It is an unpleasant revelation.
