Est Fugger

Sir: John Harris (Letters, 2 March) is right. It was Bishop Johann Fugger of Augsburg who died of a surfeit of Est! Est! Est! in Montefiascone (12th century). He was buried in the church of S. Flaviano where you can look at his tombstone with Marti- no's epitaph:

Est. Est. Propter Nimium Est Hic Jo. Defuk Dominus Meus Mortuus Est.

Defuk is the Latin form of di Fugger. Frederik van Berckel
